Initial thoughts: Foundations of Business Strategy (FOBS)

These are my initial thoughts after watching a few videos and are in no way conclusive or fully representative of the course.

The FOBS class is by Professor Michael J. Lennox of University of Virginia – Darden School of Business.

Overview: In this course, we will explore the underlying theory and frameworks that provide the foundations of a successful business strategy. We will develop the ability to think strategically by providing you the tools for conducting a strategic analysis.

The class is divided into weekly modules. Each weekly module consists of an introductory video, a reading from the strategist’s toolkit, a series of video lectures, a quiz, and a case where will apply our toolkit to a business to illustrate points in the lectures. The course will culminate in your submission of a strategic analysis of an organization of your choosing, that serves as the final exam.

The good:

The quality of the videos is top-notch. They are short, but full of information which is presented in a simple format.

Professor Lennox does a weekly debrief in which he answers top posted questions from the students and clarifies any issues that may arise during the week.

I found the information a bit challenging, but Professor Lennox uses very many illustrations that make understanding quite easy.

The excerpts from his book also were informative and helpful.

The not-so-good:

The videos for each week are only available on the Sunday before, therefore working ahead is impossible.
